NASA – Kennedy Space Center

McDonnell Douglas, NASA’s prime contractor, awarded a million dollar subcontract to Power Systems & Controls in 1992 to provide all planning, Design, testing, hardware, installation, and Training necessary to insure an uninterruptible power supply of power to the Space Station Processing Facility at Cape Canaveral.

The SSOF will be a 457,000 square foot facility that will serve as a primary pre-flight check out and processing point for Space Station Freedom elements. The three story structure, the largest new construction facility undertaken at Kennedy Space Center since the Apollo era, will include communications and electrical control areas, laboratories, logistics staging areas, operational control rooms, an office area, and a cafeteria.

McDonnell Douglas and NASA engineers conducted an exhaustive search stating in the spring of 1989 to find the power protection system with the highest reliability. They concluded that a rotary UPS system and in particular PS&C’s hybrid approach, eg: matching electronics and a rotary filter best met the demanding requirements of the Space Station Processing Facility. Power Systems & Controls will be installing (2) Series XC Hybrid Rotary UPS systems operating in a parallel redundant configuration to be on line in June of 1993.

NASA engineers were particularly impressed with the complete isolation offered by the hybrid rotary uninterruptible power supply because of the high incidence of lightning activity experienced at Cape Canaveral. A team approach was used by PS&C to identify the particular needs and fulfill the stringent requirements necessary to work with McDonnell Douglas. The team was spearheaded by PS&C’s South Eastern Regional Sales Manager, Mr. Larry Sheets, who was responsible for putting together the elements from Engineering, Field Service, and Quality Assurance needed to make a successful project. The team is approaching the half way point in the project with all project design milestones having been met and equipment nearing production completion. Test, with customer witness, will commence in January of 1993. The Space Station Processing Center is PS&C’s first major project with NASA and we are confident that PS&C is ready to tackle future NASA projects.

Power Systems & Controls has a state of the art production and test facility located in Richmond, VA allowing for easy access to Washington, DC and the east coast. PS&C has the unique ability to support both static (solid-state) and rotary (motor generator) UPS, frequency converter, and power conditioning requirements as we are one of the few companies in the world that manufactures both types of technology. Power Systems & Controls is an employee owned company and has a long history of successfully supporting mission critical applications across the world.

Federal Reserve Bank – New Orleans

Power Systems & Controls recently was awarded a contract to supply the critical power backup needs for the Federal Reserve Bank of New Orleans. The bank, which handles billions of dollars daily, has been plagued by numerous power interruptions to its network of high speed computers. PS&C Hybrid Rotary UPS systems are being installed in a power house on top of a parking garage, adjacent to the main bank building, to solve those problems. A scheduled “online” date for the UPS in early summer will permit the bank to transact its business with “uninterrupted” peace of mind.

Starting in the fall of 1991, Power Systems & Controls worked closely with the Mathes’ Group (Consulting engineers to the Federal Reserve Bank) to provide the technical assistance to bring the pieces of the complex project together. Initially the Mathes’ Group was using a German machine as the basis for their design but through the consultative selling skills of PS&C they discovered the superiority of the American design. They responded to PS&C’s online reliability, horizontally mounted M-G for total electrical isolation, and separated inverter console for ease of maintenance.

PS&C At Second Largest U.S. Refinery

Personal and unexpected attention always improves relationships and helps to create loyal customers. It is amazing how much people appreciate knowing that their business is valued and that someone cares! A great example is the Exxon refinery at Baton Rouge, which installed a PS&C Rotary Uninterruptible Power Supply, in February of 1992, that protects major operations from electrical outages.

The UPS provides electricity to the computers and software programs that control and monitor the refinery’s fractionators, catalytic crackers, and other units. If those systems lose power, the refinery runs less efficiently and becomes susceptible to operational shut downs. The entire electrical protection system consists of (2) PS&C RUPS, an 8-foot-tall bank of batteries and an 800 kW generator safeguards against instantaneous electrical dips and surges during storms that can damage refinery controls. The battery provides continuous power and protection during even the slightest outage, and if there is an extended power loss the diesel generator can run the equipment.

The PS&C RUPS and its components make Exxon Baton Rouge self-sufficient. This independence was thoroughly tested recently when Hurricane Andrew ripped through the area leaving massive destruction behind. When contacted by PS&C’s Service Coordinator, sources at Exxon told us that the entire system rode through the storm just fine. They were very pleased with our call, concern, and attention.

Years of Experience Proves Reliability

The PS&C Service Division recently surveyed customers to get historical data concerning bearing failures. All customers contacted had PS&C Service Maintenance Contracts or purchased maintenance at regular intervals. The results may amaze you. In 22 years of operation of over 350 systems, only two bearing replacements were recorded. One at the Patent and Trade Office in Washington D.C., a site with four 1000kVA systems. A pony motor bearing was replaced after a noise was detected during operation and the second was at Cincinnati Bell in Maitland, Florida as a generator bearing was noticed to be running warmer than normal during the start-up and was replaced before the unit was put on-line.

When analyzed this really is not surprising. PS&C’s motor generators actually consist of two synchronous generators, the identical type of synchronous generator that is supplied with every gen-set sold in the world. They just use one machine as a motor. PS&C also adds one additional bearing to each machine; this spreads the weight out over four bearings. PS&C runs the Power Conditioning M-G continuously; which causes less stress on the overall bearings that the start/stop type of operation of a typical gen-set.
