PS&C – Reliability…A Whole New Outlook

Ring Bus Load Management

PS&C recently shipped an UPS system with innovative load management. This innovation was part of the control logic installed in a ring bus UPS system shipped by PS&C. Previously, a ring bus was configured with “X” modules with “X-N” modules required to support the total load. When the number of modules removed (for any reason) from the ring bus exceeds “N”, the ring bus logic was required to split the ring bus. Splitting the ring bus puts part of the load on utility, while the remainder remains on the UPS. This happened because the PLC logic must make a blind decision to split the ring bud whenever the number of modules supporting the load is less than “X-N”.

This condition has been improved by the addition of PS&C’s optional “Intelligent Load Management System” for ring bus applications. By measuring the power required by each load node on the ring bus and measuring the output power of each module, the PLC has a complete picture of available power and total load. With a complete picture the PLC can determine the actual number of UPS modules required to support the actual load. It is not possible in a ring bus system to keep clean UPS power to the User’s load under more scenarios due to PS&C’s “Intelligent Load Management System”.

Okonite Site Demonstrates Reliability

At PS&C our goal has always been to build the most reliable UPS in the industry, and this we do with great pride. Our entire UPS package is robust and conservatively designed to easily deliver a long service life. An example of this longevity is seen at Okonite. Okonite, which is the largest independently owned producer of quality cables throughout the world, purchased a PS&C Hybrid Rotary UPS in 1970 when they moved into their new headquarters in Ramsey, New Jersey.

Okonite’s seven manufacturing facilities located throughout the U.S. produce high quality power and control cables for a wide range of industries, including: electric utilities, manufacturing, petrochemical, pulp & paper, railroads and transit systems. Many cables are designed for exclusive applications as diverse as underwater power transmission, deep well oil recovery and cables for x-ray and medical equipment. An IBM 4381 computer backed up by the PS&C Series XC UPS has responsibility for processing the incoming information from over 300 terminals located at these other Okonite plants and service centers.

Mr. Bill Blowers, MIS Director at the Ramsey Facility said that Okonite has been very happy with their decision to purchase a PS&C UPS. He said that they are now on their third set of batteries but the UPS is still going strong, even outlasting the Okonite personnel who recommended its purchase in 1970. Even though they have retired, the PS&C UPS continues to deliver unsurpassed critical power protection.

PS&C Signs Lee Technologies

Lee Technologies, Inc. is a Virginia based corporation established in 1983 by John C. Lee IV. The corporation’s primary interest is the sale and installation of computer support systems in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeastern regions of the United States. The company has established its corporate headquarters in Fairfax, VA. Branch offices are located in Richmond, VA and Atlanta, GA.

Lee Technologies’ showroom in Fairfax provides end-users, engineers, and contractors with the opportunity for first hand inspection of computer support hardware, as well as, the opportunity to observe stat-of-the-art computerized technical presentations on product features, operation characteristics, installation requirements, and start-up procedures. Lee Technologies goal is to satisfy their customers beyond their expectations and build long lasting relationships. The signing of Lee Technologies has already paid off for PS&C with the sale and shipment of an over a dozen Series XC UPS systems for the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in Maryland.

PS&C Idaho & Utah Rep

Mr. Ray Ward V.P. of Gruber Industries is our PS&C sales rep for Idaho & Utah. Gruber Industries has been associated with the UPS industry for the past ten years. Along with PS&C Hybrid Rotary and Rotary UPS systems they have also handled custom cabling and very small Static UPS systems ranging from 200VA to 1kVA. Due to his degree in Engineering, Mr. Ward is highly qualified to handle the numerous technical seminars and presentations in which he is asked to participate. One such presentation was made to Alcatel, in Claremont, NC who had a need for a 500kVA UPS system with a 15 minute battery.

The initial presentation about the PS&C Series XC UPS was made to Alcatel by. Mr. Ward where he learned that Alcatel had a very critical fiber optics cable manufacturing process where even small millisecond interruptions of power cost them thousands of dollars in lost production. Mr. Ward presented our Hybrid Rotary UPS solution for its ability to supply continuous uninterrupted power and for its complete isolation traits to handle the high instances of lightning caused transients at the plant. It was also pointed out that the rugged design of the PS&C Series XC would fit into the harsh plant environment. This order was awarded to PS&C because we were able to explain the technical advantages of PS&C’s Series XC Hybrid Rotary UPS early in the customer’s review process.

Ring Bus Ideal Solution for High Tech Manufacturing

PS&C is in the business of solving our customer’s problems. The hi-tech process manufacturing industry has unique problems that demand the unique solutions provided by PS&C’s Ring Bus system. Our latest ring bus site is configured with three (3) 1000kVA Hybrid Rotary UPS Reverse Transfer Modules.

No Tolerance for Down Time…

In a typical process application, like microprocessor chip production, a one second power interruption costs over $1 million in material alone! All conventional single failure points were eliminated (ie. single output, single bypass, common bus).

Expandability for Future Growth…

The process industry like many businesses is very unpredictable. This industry; however, has been experiencing explosive growth, especially the chip manufacturing sector. A system was needed with infinite growth possibilities. The ring expansion link will permit isolation for a future section to be added without shutting down the ring bus switchboard (no down time during the upgrade).

Flexibility…

Loads change often, and maintenance must be performed at regular intervals without effecting process output. The ring bus distribution system has multiple outputs allowing for separation of the load by command and multiple bypasses for load recovery.

Loads Are Very Non-Linear…

Loads consist of many very precise variable speed drives, and process computers which can feedback as high as 70% current THD to the source (UPS system). The low impedance source provided by the PS&C output generators is naturally suited for this type of demanding load.

Fast Delivery…

The company with the best product, and the ability to get it to market the fastest, wins in the high tech marketplace. PS&C was able to design, manufacture, test, and ship the entire system in only 12 weeks.
