PS&C – The Most Powerful Companies In The World

PS&C At Mitsubishi Motor

Mitsubishi Motor Manufacturing of America, Inc. represents one of the most technologically advanced auto manufacturing facilities in the world. It is designed to accommodate several car models intermixed on one assembly line. In 1985, when original construction began on the 2 million square foot facility, power protection was already part of the package. Because of the enormous power requirements of the facility, two independent utility sources were utilized. These were connected to an automatic transfer switch, which sensed when one utility service was bad and switched to the other service.

In November of 1987, (2) dozen PS&C Industrial Motor Generator  units were installed to bridge the gap during operation of the transfer switch and to provide total electrical isolation from voltage variations and electrical disturbances (such as sags, brownouts, surges, etc.) on the normal utility source. The main function of the M-G sets was to provide clean, constant power to the computers controlling over 600 automated robots used at the facility to perform monotonous, cumbersome, and less desirable tasks.

According to Mr. Tom Hutson of Mitsubishi Plant Engineering, “partial interruptions are costly; therefore, the Series IMG must stay up and provide a clean energy source.” When asked if he would purchase another Series IMG Mr. Hutson said, “Yes, the quality of the output is the best, and I like the complete isolation of the outside energy source”. The PS&C M-G is particularly well suited for this demanding application because of the nature of the other loads on the same service, i.e. welders, painters, conveyers, etc. which work together to create a hostile environment for sensitive computer equipment. The Series IMG takes the dirty power source and makes it clean – a perfect solution for any industrial operation that requires clean, dependable power for their critical operations”.

PS&C Installed Worldwide

Since its establishment in 1965, Power Systems & Controls has prided itself on the ruggedness and adaptability of our rotary UPS and Power Conditioning systems. Units bearing the PS&C name can be found all over the world operating in many different climates and under very diverse conditions. PS&C units are presently operating in the Philippines at Metro Bank, at Pilipino Telephone, and over a dozen Series XC RUPS will soon be shipped to Meralco. Firms such as Medtronics, Smith Kline, and Dupont Merck in Puerto Rico also trust PS&C to keep their facilities running smoothly.

When Motorola in Hong Kong needed reliable, dependable backup for its fabrication plant, they chose PS&C. Other customers who depend on PS&C’s proven reliability are China Steel, Shell Canada, CFB Borden, and Bradesco Bank in Brazil. Guardian Industries, one of the world’s largest producers of glass for the automotive and construction industries, has had PS&C Series XC systems in their plant in Venezuela since 1980.

Power Systems & Controls recently starting supplying UPS systems to AURA – The Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy. The undertaking, known as the Gemini Project, is an international partnership to build two 8-meter telescopes. One will be located on Mount Mauna Kea, Hawaii and one on Mount Cerro Pachon, Chile. The telescopes and auxiliary instrumentation will be international facilities open to the scientific communities of England, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, and the United States.

The Series MC systems provided by PS&C will be backing up the observatory for rotating the building, as well as, serving as backup for the orderly shutdown of the facilities’ computers, should a power outage occur. Both sites offer high degree of clear weather and excellent atmospheric stability. The Gemini telescopes are designed to use the best image quality allowed by the Earth’s atmosphere. They will undertake a broad range of astronomical research programs within the partner countries.

The northern Gemini Telescope site located on the summit of Mauna Kea is completely developed with phone, electric, and water systems in place. The Cerro Pachon site located in the foothills of the Chilean Andes and is at present a mostly undeveloped site located on land owned by AURA. As evidenced, PS&C machines have proven their ability commercially worldwide. Wherever or whatever the problem you have with your electrical system, you can count on Power Systems & Controls to provide the best solution for your power quality needs.

Synchronous Condenser Excels

A key reason for purchasing a Series SC Synchronous Condenser is to reduce the cost of power by reducing the user’s power factor. Unlike other methods and products available for power factor control, the Series SC is both automatic and seamless in its operation. The control logic automatically adjusts its VAR output to maintain the user’s power factor at the preset level. These changes occur without causing glitches or transients to the user’s power. Since its operation is totally without transients, it cannot upset any of the user’s critical operations.

Beyond the technology needed to accomplish its intended task, the Series SC has many user friendly enhancements. One feature available is the automatic restart after power loss. When a power outage occurs, the Series SC waits one minute beyond the return of utility voltage with acceptable tolerances. This waiting period delays the starting current beyond the start-up of other critical equipment. Ten seconds before the actual restart, the Series SC turns on its alarm to warn of an impending restart. If the utility voltage should fall out of acceptable limits during the restart, it waits another minute before attempting to restart a second time. If the unit is unable to start then, it turns on its alarm and ceases trying. At this point the utility fault is significant and repeated restart attempts are futile. After power is restored, the Series SC can then be started manually.

The PS&C Synchronous Condenser has a touch screen display and interface which are the latest in display and control technology. The controls are friendly and easily understood so that the user can control the unit from this panel. The touch screen will display voltage, current, power factor, and power information. Internally, it has several serial busses. These can be used to deliver data to the user’s monitoring system. Status and fault data, values of the voltages, currents, power factor, etc. are available.

PS&C Offers Many Solutions

In our thirty years of providing products and services to critical power customers, PS&C has observed many changes in the industry. Obviously, the focus for years was on large Data Centers and Telecommunication facilities. The power demands of these applications were considerable and the importance of clean, uninterrupted electrical power was obvious. Over twenty years later, in addition to the large data centers, we now see critical operations being decentralized in the Office, Test & Research Labs, and Manufacturing locations. Quite often power quality is an unexpected problem. In response to this need, we can perform an analysis of a customer’s electrical system to determine the exact causes of their power problems.

Also in response to the smaller electrical loads which require maximum reliability, we now offer the Series MC from 30kVA up to 250kVA. This RUPS, like our larger Series XC, is a true online design. While it continuously produces clean, isolated power from its synchronous generator, the electrical load is provided with a perfect sine wave. When a disturbance or outage is long enough to require the UPS to draw power from the battery, nothing such as a switch or transfer needs to occur. We believe that this is the ultimate in power protection as do all of our satisfied customers.
