PS&C Wins In Southeast Asia

Power Systems & Controls is proud to announce that our manufacturer’s representative in the Philippines, Remax, has won another project for PS&C in the telecommunications and banking industry. The system being procured is a redundant Series XC Hybrid Rotary Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) system. It will be supporting a complex banking data center. PS&C competed against many static (solid-state) and other rotary manufacturers for the project; however, Remax was able to secure the order due to their successful past performance working with leaders in the industry, as well as, the superior benefits that the Series XC offered. We are excited to send another system to the Southeast Asian and look forward to what Remax has in store for the future!

Power Systems & Controls has a state of the art production and test facility located in Richmond, VA allowing for easy access to Washington, DC and the east coast. PS&C has the unique ability to support both static (solid-state) and rotary (motor generator) UPS, frequency converter, and power conditioning requirements as we are one of the few companies in the world that manufactures both types of technology. Power Systems & Controls is an employee owned company and has a long history of successfully supporting mission critical applications across the world. PS&C – The Power Is On!

About PS&C

Power Systems & Controls is a world leader in power quality and power protection technology, building systems for mission critical applications world-wide. Clients include many of the world’s leading research and test laboratories, rail and sea mass transit, advanced manufacturing, and data centers. The company was founded in 1965 by CAT. Today the company is headquartered in Richmond, VA and supports the USG and DOD, Fortune 500, and many other international organizations on a wide range of applications. We don’t just solve power problems; we engineer power solutions.

“Ride-Thru” Design Enters Production

Power Systems & Controls is a power quality company dedicated to bringing together innovation and creativity to perfect our power quality offerings. Over the last six months PS&C Engineering has been allocating their time and effort into perfecting the new “Ride-Thru” functions of our Series IMG and Series SMG motor generator sets.

The “Ride-Thru” integrates state-of-the-art controls, a single shaft motor-generator, and a mechanical flywheel into a Power Conditioning system that can deliver up to 5 seconds of Ride-Thru during an interruption of power. The typical induction-synchronous M-G system delivers this ride-thru with a maximum frequency drop at full load of no more than 57 on a 60Hz system.

For sensitive applications where tighter tolerances are required, the Series SMG is available with ride-thru. Systems with this innovative new feature are sized and customized to meet a wide range of customer driven application criteria. Systems are available in size ranges up to 2000kVA for low voltage and medium voltage applications. Also please consult our factory for 600V and other international voltages available. We are excited about this new feature and look forward to better serving our customers’ requirements in the future.

PS&C Introduces AVR

For the last few years, Power Systems & Controls had dedicated substantial Research & Development time and funding to the development of the Series GSR, Government Standard Automatic Voltage Regulator. The Series GSR is an extended range automatic voltage regulator designed to meet the high standards of the United States Government. It was put into development to meet a growing need by our USG customers and clients. Especially those customers stationed overseas where constant voltage deviations cause havoc on high-tech equipment and electronics.

The Series GSR is the most economical Power Conditioning solution available, and provides voltage sensitive load equipment with conditioned power that has been filtered for noise and adjusted for voltage. On a 480V system a 240V swing on the input will show up as less than a 50V change at the load. The Series GSR uses solid-state switches to select between seven (7) possible taps on the triple shielded isolation transformer. This switching takes place in less than a cycle. The system also provides protection from transient voltage spikes. It also comes complete with a system Maintenance Bypass Switch. Furthermore, the AVR has an array of options available to customize it to fit your specific application.

New Technology…Old Idea

Almost fifty years ago, capacitors became popular for Power Factor Correction due to their low relative cost. However, recently companies have experienced problems with their capacitors. In many cases entire facilities need to have their power factor corrected. The act of correcting power factor must be seamless and cause no disturbances or oscillations within the facility. PS&C’s Series SC, Synchronous Condenser, has been designed to do just that.

The first step in the updating process was to add a “modern” power factor controller to regulate the field of the synchronous machine. The controller allows the user to adjust the corrected Power Factor of his load between .8 lagging and .9 leading. Once set, the controller adjusts the field of the synchronous machine to maintain the load at the desired power factor. The Series SC maintains the power factor under all conditions up to the kVAR rating of the machine. If the demand exceeds the SC’s rating, the synchronous condenser changes to a constant kVAR mode, thus delivering the maximum correction available.

The Series SC employs the latest in PLC and detector technology to make the user’s interface simple and direct. A feature resulting from the use of a PLC is its ability to automatically restart itself after a power interruption. This feature helps to minimize the fifteen-minute peak power demand factor. The combination of modern technology and the rugged design of the machine insures that the Series SC will provide reliable Power Factor Correction for many years to come.
