PS&C In Dominican Republic

 

Power Systems & Controls will be sending (2) dozen Synchronous Condenser systems down to the Dominican Republic for a tender project that just materialized. They will range in size between 1250kVAR and 1750kVAR. We cannot release any information about the customer at this time due to the importance of the project, but we look forward to supporting them on this specific application.

A Series SC is a synchronous machine that delivers the required reactive power dynamically. The module is connected to the power line and is intentionally run in an overexcited condition. The condenser will adjust the excitation level automatically to maintain the power factor at the correct setting. It monitors the power factor and produces the right amount of VAR needed to correct any power factor without switching transients and is not troubled by harmonic currents produced by solid-state motor drives. The Series SC also helps overall power quality by reducing voltage transients and by reducing the problems associated with harmonic distortion found in many manufacturing process. Intelligent Micro Grid, Part 2

                                                                        

The Enclosure systems for the Intelligent Micro Grid are self-contained and built to withstand harsh in-theatre deployments. They are designed to be air flown if required and can be positioned via airlifts. The TDPU’s utilize special sand louvers and filters to keep the micro particles from entering into the portable Diesel Engines air stream, thus reducing the engines life. External doors are not required to be open when the engines are running. The exhaust of both the radiator and engine direct upwards, so the surrounding dB level is greatly reduced.

The Intelligent Micro Grid utilizes a plug & play design for ease of connection and portability. All power connections between the TDPU and TDMU utilize identical connectors that cannot be interchanged into an incorrect plug, if it fits then connection is correct. All communication connections utilize the same topology as the load connections. This allows for the TDPU and TDMU to be connected, up and running, within 20 minutes from being positioned on-site. As each power connection is made, the TDMU will recognize the TDPU’s power capability and automatically make adjustments to the internal “brain” configuration. This avoids the TDMU from exceeding that particular TDPU’s power capabilities.

The Intelligent Micro Grid is available with SAT-COM capability. This option allows the system, with proper software and codes, to be accessed from a remote location. This option has been tested, in real time, by a USG threat assessment team. The findings indicated the system integrity to be of a low level risk when intentional, external influence is present. The team was also unable to influence the power output of the Intelligent Micro Grid.

Then AES unit are utilized, the TDMU controls and integrates the AES source into the Intelligent Micro Grid output. The AES option will further reduce fossil fuel usage, engine run time and engine maintenance respectively. The AES also offers additional inductive inrush capabilities to the on-site grid, allowing the TDPU’s to be utilized at an “average load” basis, rather than at a “peak load” basis. Most AES options are available with Energy Storage Modules (ESM), such as batteries, which further enhance the Intelligent Micro Grid capabilities and performance.

Africa Aerospace & Defense Expo 2010

 

                                                             

Power Systems & Controls will be travelling to the Africa Aerospace and Defense Expo (AAD EXPO) in South Africa from September 21 – September 25, 2010. AAD Expo is one of the largest trade exhibition and air shows in Africa. The event is hosted over a five day period with three days dedicated to trade exhibition and two days for the air show, which is open to both the media and general public. It boasts more than 450 participating companies in the defense and aerospace industries, from over 30 countries.

Power Systems & Controls will be travelling to Farnborough International Airshow 2010 at Farnborough Airport in Hampshire, United Kingdom from July 19 – July 25, 2010. It is one of the world’s most famous air shows and attracts crowds in excess of 250,000. The airshow is an important event in the international aerospace and defense industry calendar, providing an opportunity to demonstrate civilian and military aircraft to potential customers and investors.

Intelligent Micro Grid, Part 1

                                                                        

The PS&C Intelligent Micro Grid utilizes a modular topology consisting of a TDMU (Tactical Deployable Monitoring Unit) and single/multiple TDPU’s (Tactical Deployable Power Unit). The number of TDPU’s is dependent on the load requirement. The TDPU’s are building blocks, if more power is required, just add another TDPU. The TDMU combines the TDPUs into one power source, which in turn supports the required load.

Key Advantages of PS&C Intelligent Micro Grid:

  • Reduction in Fossil Fuel Consumption
  • Reduction in War Fighter exposure to hostile areas due to reduced fuel convoys and need for individual engine Preventative Maintenance (PM) requirements. (Ex. System fully depletes all available engine consumables, allowing for an “overall” PM, instead of an “individual” engine PM.)
  • Reduction in premature damage to engines
  • Maximization of system consumables (Ex. System’s ability to fully use all consumables – filters, oil, etc. – allowing for all engines to be serviced at one time, with all consumables fully depleted.)
  • Tactically deployable with plug & play topology, reducing the need for trained technicians to complete the initial system site placement and start-up
  • Modular design allowing for airlift operations in remote areas without sacrificing required power needs
  • Compatible with Alternative Energy Sources (AES) and energy storage devices, further reducing fossil fuel, consumables, and PM costs

The TDMU is the “Brain” of the Intelligent Micro Grid. The TDMU monitors and meets the load requirement by determining the best available power configuration as dictated by real time load data. The TDMU is completely programmable, user friendly utilizing a color touch screen HMI. The TDMU has the capability to store multiple, preconfigured load programs to execute at the push of a button, or execute run commands off of real time load data. The TDMU, because of its design, can also incorporate alternative energy sources, such as solar, wind, etc. The TDMU can prioritize the AES, relative to the engine sources, so once again maximum energy efficiency can be experienced.

The TDMU maximizes all available power sources, whether combustion, solar, wind, or some other type of AES. In the event a power source is requested to come online, but found not to be available, the TDMU will select the next best option. In the event the TDMU cannot obtain the power requirement within normal operating parameters; the TDMU will then disregard the active alerts/alarms. The TDMU will then make the selection based on a predetermined risk order as pertaining to the active alerts/alarms active in the system The TDMU’s main purpose is to maximize the available power, engine life and performance, while minimizing engine fuel consumption and wear, by making intelligent selections as the power requirements change in real time.

PS&C ANSWERS the CALL

                                                                        

Power Systems & Controls delivered a new series of “Harsh Environment” Static Frequency Converters to the DOD in support of adverse temperature and weather conditions in lightly manned sites.  This system is the culmination of PS&C’s Engineering experience working with PS&C’s Field Service Division to build and deliver equipment for site testing over the past 6 months.  The equipment exceeded the USG’s expectations and opens the door for PS&C to develop similar systems for existing relationships.  “I didn’t think you could really build the thing as requested, but you have impressed us – as usual” was stated by the client after site performance was published.
