Over twenty years later, in addition to the large data centers, we now see critical operations being decentralized in the Office, Test & Research Labs, and Manufacturing locations. Quite often power quality is an unexpected problem. In response to this need, we can perform an analysis of a customer’s electrical system to determine the exact causes of their power problems.

Also in response to the smaller electrical loads which require maximum reliability, we now offer the Series MC from 30kVA up to 250kVA. This RUPS, like our larger Series XC, is a true online design. While it continuously produces clean, isolated power from its synchronous generator, the electrical load is provided with a perfect sine wave. When a disturbance or outage is long enough to require the UPS to draw power from the battery, nothing such as a switch or transfer needs to occur. We believe that this is the ultimate in power protection as do all of our satisfied customers.

PS&C UPS Reliability

                                                    

The words “simple” and “reliable” are two words often exploited in today’s commercial environment. However, when applied to PS&C’s newest product, the Series MC hybrid rotary UPS, these terms are more than accurate. Available in modules ranging from 30 to 200kVA, the Series MC is extremely easy to operate. The touch screen control panel allows for easy operation and makes complicated and/or confusing operating instructions a thing of the past. To provide UPS protection for the critical load, the operator simply pushes the button labeled “UPS”. To place the load on utility and shut down the Series MC, just pushing the “Bypass” button transfers the load without any interruption.

The Series MC’s claim of superior reliability is backed by 30 years of rotary UPS experience and technology. PS&C uses as an output device, a time proven synchronous generator which is driven by a highly efficient inverted rated induction motor. A highly dependable, conservatively rated induction motor drive provides the power to the induction motors and all Series MC operations are controlled by PLC control technology. With its ease of operation and 30 years of Rotary UPS experience behind its design, you just cant go wrong with PS&C.

Ring Bus Load Management

                                                    

PS&C recently shipped an UPS system with innovative load management. This innovation was part of the control logic installed in a ring bus UPS system shipped by PS&C. Previously, a ring bus was configured with “X” modules with “X-N” modules required to support the total load. When the number of modules removed (for any reason) from the ring bus exceeds “N”, the ring bus logic was required to split the ring bus. Splitting the ring bus puts part of the load on utility, while the remainder remains on the UPS. This happened because the PLC logic must make a blind decision to split the ring bud whenever the number of modules supporting the load is less than “X-N”.

This condition has been improved by the addition of PS&C’s optional “Intelligent Load Management System” for ring bus applications. By measuring the power required by each load node on the ring bus and measuring the output power of each module, the PLC has a complete picture of available power and total load. With a complete picture the PLC can determine the actual number of UPS modules required to support the actual load. It is not possible in a ring bus system to keep clean UPS power to the User’s load under more scenarios due to PS&C’s “Intelligent Load Management System”.

No Tolerance for Down Time…

In a typical process application, like microprocessor chip production, a one second power interruption costs over $1 million in material alone! All conventional single failure points were eliminated (ie. single output, single bypass, common bus).

Loads change often, and maintenance must be performed at regular intervals without effecting process output. The ring bus distribution system has multiple outputs allowing for separation of the load by command and multiple bypasses for load recovery.

Loads Are Very Non-Linear…

Loads consist of many very precise variable speed drives, and process computers which can feedback as high as 70% current THD to the source (UPS system). The low impedance source provided by the PS&C output generators is naturally suited for this type of demanding load.

PS&C Ring Bus Has Outstanding Potential

                                                    

Power Systems & Controls’ “Ring Bus” is a name for a clever UPS network configuration. PS&C’s Ring Bus system consists of a standard Hybrid Rotary, reverse transfer modules with extra current sensing for paralleling, a Ring Bus Controller (RBCC) for supervision of the module (Each RBCC has a PLC and a backup PLC to insure redundancy and reliability in the control of the node), system switchgear, and a Central Controller, which serves as a system control interface.

Ring Bus systems are normally designed such that N+1 UPS modules will support the total system load. This allows a module to be removed from the bus for maintenance without reduction of the total amount of conditioned power supplied to the load. In the event that fewer than the required UPS modules is available to support the load, the flexible Ring Bus allows some load to be supported by the utility or alternate source while supplying conditioned power to the remainder of the critical load. Such capability does not exist in normal paralleled UPS systems.

Ease of growth is the most outstanding feature of the Ring Bus. Additional modules are installed, wired, ad tested on-site before any connections are made to the Ring us. When the new modules are ready, the Ring Bus node breakers can be closed and the new modules brought on line – with no interruption to the critical load.
