International Paris Air Show 2011

                                                        

Power Systems & Controls will be travelling to International Paris Air Show 2011 at Le Bourget Airport in Paris France from June 20 – June 26, 2011. The Paris Air Show claims to be the world’s oldest air show seeing as it was first established in 1909. The airshow is an important event in the international aerospace and defense industry calendar, providing an opportunity to demonstrate civilian and military aircraft to potential customers and investors. This years show is expected to attract more than 150,000 professionals and over 200,000 members of the general public from over 80 countries. The Paris event starts with four professional days closed to the general public. It then opens to the public from Friday to Sunday. The event is held every two years at the same airfield that Charles Lindbergh landed after the first solo transatlantic flight.

PS&C Intelligent Micro Grid In Afghanistan

                                                                        

In the summer of 2011, the 1 MW Intelligent Micro Grid was deployed to Bagram Air Field in Afghanistan to support a FOB. The United States Army Materials Systems Analysis Activity (AMSAA) performed a detailed study on the Intelligent Micro Grid in real time. Below are unedited findings by the AMSAA report:

ONE-MEGAWATT AFGHANISTAN MICROGRID PROJECT

1. Executive Summary

The Afghanistan Microgrid Project (AMP) One-Megawatt (1MW) Microgrid is a system of power generating components that actively matches supply capacity to the demanded load. The main goal of this system is to save fossil fuel consumption in austere environments. This report documents the data collection methods and analyzes critical metrics such as fuel consumption and generator operational hours. The baseline used for comparison is the existing thirteen 60kW Tactical Quiet Generators (TQG) that were already in place before the microgrid (MG) was installed.

2. Microgrid Analysis Results

  • Insertion of the Microgrid with existing controls resulted in a 17% (7,344 gal) decrease in fuel consumption over the baseline during the test period (August 19, 2011 to November 5) at the test location, Bagram Airfield (BAF) Afghanistan.
  • The Microgrid with existing controls reduced the amount of generator operational hours by 85% during the study period, which resulted in 67% lower maintenance costs.
  • The Microgrid with existing controls improved the availability of power relative to Tactical Quiet Generator (TQG) operation from 97.9% to 100% during the study period.
  • Simulations show the Microgrid with existing controls could be optimized and would have saved an additional 20% (8,644 gal) of fuel and 7% of operation hours’ y reprogramming the generator controls
  • Optimized Microgrid simulations show that the addition of 200kW of solar panels would have resulted in a 12% reduction in fuel relative to the optimized microgrid simulation over the test period
  • Simulations show that the addition of energy storage when used to reduce the amount of spinning reserve would have saved only an additional 2% of fuel.
  • Simulations of solar set-up (flat, inclined, single-axis tracing, dual-axis tracking) show minimal differences in total fuel consumption savings (+/- 3%).
  • While the Microgrid generally made areas of the camp less noisy, the immediate area surrounding the Microgrid was subjected to noticeably loud intermittent generator operation instead of steady TQG operation

Power Systems & Controls will be travelling to IDEX 2011 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from February 20 – February 24, 2011. IDEX takes place biennially at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC), which is centrally located in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. IDEX is the only international defence exhibition and conference in the MENA region demonstrating the latest technology across land, sea and air sectors of defence. It is a unique platform to establish and strengthen relationships with government departments, businesses and armed forces throughout the region.

PS&C In Dominican Republic

 

Power Systems & Controls will be sending (2) dozen Synchronous Condenser systems down to the Dominican Republic for a tender project that just materialized. They will range in size between 1250kVAR and 1750kVAR. We cannot release any information about the customer at this time due to the importance of the project, but we look forward to supporting them on this specific application.

A Series SC is a synchronous machine that delivers the required reactive power dynamically. The module is connected to the power line and is intentionally run in an overexcited condition. The condenser will adjust the excitation level automatically to maintain the power factor at the correct setting. It monitors the power factor and produces the right amount of VAR needed to correct any power factor without switching transients and is not troubled by harmonic currents produced by solid-state motor drives. The Series SC also helps overall power quality by reducing voltage transients and by reducing the problems associated with harmonic distortion found in many manufacturing process. PS&C looks forward to working in the Dominican Republic and are glad we could help bring the project to fruition.

Intelligent Micro Grid, Part 2

                                                                        

The Enclosure systems for the Intelligent Micro Grid are self-contained and built to withstand harsh in-theatre deployments. They are designed to be air flown if required and can be positioned via airlifts. The TDPU’s utilize special sand louvers and filters to keep the micro particles from entering into the portable Diesel Engines air stream, thus reducing the engines life. External doors are not required to be open when the engines are running. The exhaust of both the radiator and engine direct upwards, so the surrounding dB level is greatly reduced.

The Intelligent Micro Grid utilizes a plug & play design for ease of connection and portability. All power connections between the TDPU and TDMU utilize identical connectors that cannot be interchanged into an incorrect plug, if it fits then connection is correct. All communication connections utilize the same topology as the load connections. This allows for the TDPU and TDMU to be connected, up and running, within 20 minutes from being positioned on-site. As each power connection is made, the TDMU will recognize the TDPU’s power capability and automatically make adjustments to the internal “brain” configuration. This avoids the TDMU from exceeding that particular TDPU’s power capabilities.

The Intelligent Micro Grid is available with SAT-COM capability. This option allows the system, with proper software and codes, to be accessed from a remote location. This option has been tested, in real time, by a USG threat assessment team. The findings indicated the system integrity to be of a low level risk when intentional, external influence is present. The team was also unable to influence the power output of the Intelligent Micro Grid.

Then AES unit are utilized, the TDMU controls and integrates the AES source into the Intelligent Micro Grid output. The AES option will further reduce fossil fuel usage, engine run time and engine maintenance respectively. The AES also offers additional inductive inrush capabilities to the on-site grid, allowing the TDPU’s to be utilized at an “average load” basis, rather than at a “peak load” basis. Most AES options are available with Energy Storage Modules (ESM), such as batteries, which further enhance the Intelligent Micro Grid capabilities and performance.
