As PS&C’s products are being installed worldwide, there is a need to provide a high level of quality Service to all sites. PS&C offers a service which allows it to monitor the status of its UPS products wherever they are installed. This service is referred to as our SCADA system (System Control And Data Acquisition). The SCADA system consists of an on-site desktop computer that uses PS&C custom software to acquire all voltages, currents, power, and status information from the Uninterruptible Power Supply PLC.

This data is present in all PS&C Products. It is used to make the decisions necessary to insure that protected power is provided to the user’s critical load. The SCADA software acquires this system data via a serial link from the PLC. Both RS-232 and RS-422/485 serial links are available to allow the desktop computer to be separated from the PLC by a few feet or several thousand feet, allowing the maximum flexibility for locating the desktop computer. The data gathered by the SCADA computer is monitored by computers at PS&C via a direct dial-in modem. The data monitoring process is non-intrusive, and the acquisition of this data and status information is totally transparent to the operation of the UPS. The gathering of this data allows PS&C to establish trends which will allow for proper scheduling of preventative maintenance. In the event a UPS should experience fault, the SCADA becomes a powerful troubleshooting tool.

When a fault occurs, the SCADA software takes multiple “snapshots” of all system data before, during, and after fault event. The fault history allows the technician to diagnose the problem remotely. If a visit to the site is necessary, the Field Service technician is much better equipped to quickly solve the problem as a result of having reviewed the fault history stored in the SCADA computer. PS&C’s SCADA software is a powerful tool to improve the quality of its service to all its UPS users.
