New Advanced Fiber Optics

 

Power Systems & Controls has embraced the new trend of fiber optics, and has started incorporating this exciting new technology into our power quality systems. The speed and flexibility in system communication permitted by fiber optics is truly amazing. This is why PS&C is offering two new models of our Series RMC, Remote Monitor & Control. The original version was only available in analog; however, we now offer a complete digital version, as well as, a fiber optic model.

The digital version is the same as the original analog version, except it utilizes digital meters. The fiber version is a fiber optic communicating unit with a touch screen interface based on a PLC platform to achieve the 100% electrical isolation required for the unit. This model will also collect and transmit full system telemetry back to the remote location for the diesel generator, UPS, AVR, fuel tank, pump, and breaker position as a minimum. This just goes to show the great things that can happen when you embrace change as new technologies appear to be emerging each and every day.

Paris Air Show 2005

                                                                

Power Systems & Controls will be travelling to International Paris Air Show 2005 at Le Bourget Airport in Paris France from June 13 – June 19, 2005. The Paris Air Show claims to be the world’s oldest air show seeing as it was first established in 1909. The airshow is an important event in the international aerospace and defense industry calendar, providing an opportunity to demonstrate civilian and military aircraft to potential customers and investors. The Paris event starts with four professional days closed to the general public. It then opens to the public from Friday to Sunday. The event is held every two years at the same airfield that Charles Lindbergh landed after the first solo transatlantic flight.

PS&C Launches Solid-State Solutions

 

Power Systems & Controls is proud to announce the conclusion of a five year R&D effort to design and create our own line of Solid-state power quality products. Engineering has spent a lot of effort in achieving this goal. Five years ago, PS&C reorganized the Engineering department to have a greater emphasis on electrical, solid-state equipment to meet the growing demand.

PS&C President & CEO Tom Delano has said, “This has been an important focus of our company ever since I joined in 1999. To achieve this goal, we brought in new talent from similar fields to bolster the efforts of our electrical engineering department in the design and implementation. I challenged them to create a competitive product, which will push the envelope long after being launched. I feel we have accomplished this goal, and am proud to announce this new chapter of our company’s history.” The first two power quality systems being released are the Series SFC, a Static Frequency Converter system, and the Series LPP, a Solid-State Portable Power module. A static (solid-state) Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) line should be ready for release by next year. It has taken longer to develop due to the complex nature of its design.

The Series SFC is a static frequency converter designed for our corporate, government, and international customers. It is offered in a 6 or 12 pulse model, as well as, in a full IGBT system with the latest technology available. Currently the Series SFC is only available in a vertical configuration. The Series SFC is built on a dynamic platform, which is versatile enough to incorporate an IGBT topology for the rectifier or traditional semiconductors when the customer requires the 6, 12, or 24 pulse rectifier option.

This advancement in digital technology gives the PS&C inverter the robust output required by our customers and clients, while maintaining the precise output requirements. PS&C has decades invested in the development of power quality systems, and we always create the best solution for the application. With an incredible output range reaching farther, this machine will support equipment in the even the most extreme electrical conditions.

The Series LPP was developed as “Portable Power” for the secure community within the USG. This harsh environment system has been designed in support of the “mission critical” customer for the immediate deployment efforts around the world. These units support the tactical deployment terms in the most remote locations, where the power is either poor or nonexistent. The Series LPP will accept voltage variations from 200 to 230VAC and frequency ranging from 30 to 70Hz to make it the perfect fix for power problems experienced in remote locations throughout the world.

PS&C + SHOP-VAC In CHINA

                                                          

Shop-Vac Corporation is the recognized world leader in wet/dry vacuum cleaners. Shop-Vac has manufactured innovative, high quality vacuum cleaners, and offers the most complete line of vacuum cleaners and accessories available for consumer, industrial and commercial applications. Power Systems & Controls was contacted by Shop-Vac to support the transition of their manufacturing operations from the United States to China.

Shop-Vac needed Frequency Conversion support to convert the power from China (50Hz), so it would work for their equipment being shipped from the United States (60Hz). PS&C provided dozens of large scale Series RFC rotary frequency converter systems to do the job. We are pleased to have another satisfied customer, and are glad we could help their transition with our superior products and logistics!

New PS&C Series AVR

 

Corporate sales has been pushing PS&C’s Engineering group on developing an Automatic Voltage Regulator, which would be based on our popular Series GSR, but one that we could offer to our corporate customers and clients. Customers are constantly sending us requests for such systems, but until today we could only offer AVR’s with government specs. However, Power Systems & Controls now offers our Series AVR Automatic Voltage Regulator, which was designed for corporate and international entities in mind. It offers the same results and dependability of our trusted GSR, but at a more economical cost.

The Series AVR is the most economical power conditioning available in the market. The Series AVR provides voltage sensitive load equipment with conditioned power that have been filtered for noise and adjusted for voltage. It uses solid-state switches to select between 7 possible taps on the triple shielded isolation transformer. This switching takes place in less than a cycle. The system also provides protection from transient voltage spikes, and comes complete with a system bypass switch for maintenance.

The Greenbrier Chooses PS&C

                                                    

The Greenbrier recently decided to go with Power Systems & Controls and purchase a set of Series MC Hybrid Rotary Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems to protect their critical operations. This Series MC will be the first PS&C Product installed at the Greenbrier. The Greenbrier is a 4 Star and 5 Diamond Award winning luxury resort located just outside the town of White Sulphur Springs in West Virginia. In 1858, a hotel – the first building was built on the property to cater to influential northerners and southerners alike. In 1913, a new building was built and named The Greenbrier and this new name was adopted for the entire resort.

The Greenbrier is most known and famous for its role in being the Congressional shelter during the Cold War. In the late 1950’s, the USG approached The Greenbrier for assistance in creating a secret emergency relocation center to house Congress in the aftermath of a nuclear holocaust. The classified, underground facility, named “Project Greek Island”, was built at the same time as the West Virginia Wing, an above-ground addition to the hotel.

Although the bunker was kept stocked with supplies for (30) years, it was never actually used as an emergency location, even during the Cuban Missile Crisis. The bunker’s existence was not acknowledged until The Washington Post revealed it in a 1992 story. The facility was decommissioned as a bunker, and has since been renovated and is used as a data storage facility for private sector entities. It is featured in an attraction in which visitors can tour the now declassified facilities, known as The Bunker.

Peace Vector VI, Egypt

                                                                      

The US Government and Egypt announced an agreement to sell 24 new build F-16s for the Egyptian Air Force. Financing for the sale is in place through the US FMS program. The United States agreed to sell Egypt $3.2 billion worth of new American weapons, including 24 F-16 Block 40 aircraft, 200 M-1A1 tanks and 32 Patriot missiles. Egypt would pay for the arms from the $1.2 billion a year it gets in US military aid.

Power Systems & Controls worked with Contrak International to win the project to provide Frequency Converters to power the twenty-four (24) F-16 fighter jets. The converters chosen were the Series RFC Rotary Frequency Converters. They will be installed in Cairo, Egypt. The Series RFC provides reliable power to the load while converting the input frequency. Output voltage and frequency are maintained within specifications by internal control logic. Under normal operation, the Series RFC acts as a rotating filter protecting the load from utility transients and brownouts. We are excited to work with Contrak International in supporting the Egyptian military’s power quality needs now and into the future.

Flywheel Technology Arrives

 

Power Systems & Controls has been working with some of the leading flywheel manufacturers in the country for some time in incorporating this technology into our advanced UPS systems. Due to these efforts, PS&C is proud to announce the release of two new product lines. The Series EPM Extended Power Module is a standalone power module designed to replace or supplement batteries in a UPS system. It is an energy storage system that creates power by means of kinetic energy conversion rather than the chemical reaction process utilized in battery strings. PS&C’s Flywheel technology is an extremely reliable source of emergency power developed to support the D.C. voltage long enough for the standby diesel generator to start and be transferred on line.

The rotating mass is driven by an induction motor through a variable frequency drive. The D.C. output is derived from a three phase synchronous output converted via a rectifier. As the standard construction is a two bearing, single shaft machine there is few serviceable components in the system; making maintenance requirements minimum. PS&C Series EPM combines the latest engineering methods with “Brute Force” technology. The extended power module offers the durability and rigidness of a battery without the maintenance required or the potential problems associated with them.

The second flywheel technological breakthrough was the Series NBNo Break Battery less Rotary UPS. The Series NB combines two proven power protection systems into one complete package. Standard systems are available up to 2,500kVA at voltages ranging from 208 to 13,800. The heart of the “No Break” system is the extended power module. The motor-generator, utilizing state-of-the-art mechanical energy storage, accepts raw electrical power from the normal power company and conditions it to computer grade electrical power. Should normal power fail, the Series NB will start the back-up engine generator and seamlessly provide continuous electrical power to the load.
