New Technology…Old Idea

Almost fifty years ago, capacitors became popular for Power Factor Correction due to their low relative cost. However, recently companies have experienced problems with their capacitors. In many cases entire facilities need to have their power factor corrected. The act of correcting power factor must be seamless and cause no disturbances or oscillations within the facility. PS&C’s Series SC, Synchronous Condenser, has been designed to do just that.

The first step in the updating process was to add a “modern” power factor controller to regulate the field of the synchronous machine. The controller allows the user to adjust the corrected Power Factor of his load between .8 lagging and .9 leading. Once set, the controller adjusts the field of the synchronous machine to maintain the load at the desired power factor. The Series SC maintains the power factor under all conditions up to the kVAR rating of the machine. If the demand exceeds the SC’s rating, the synchronous condenser changes to a constant kVAR mode, thus delivering the maximum correction available.

The Series SC employs the latest in PLC and detector technology to make the user’s interface simple and direct. A feature resulting from the use of a PLC is its ability to automatically restart itself after a power interruption. This feature helps to minimize the fifteen-minute peak power demand factor. The combination of modern technology and the rugged design of the machine insures that the Series SC will provide reliable Power Factor Correction for many years to come.

Long Island Rail Road Selects PS&C

The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) is a commuter system provider serving Long Island and New York. It is the second busiest commuter railroad in North America serving millions of passengers each year. Established in 1834 and having operated continuously since then, it is the oldest US railroad still operating under its original name and charter. There are 124 stations on the LIRR with more than 700 miles of track, and it is publicly owned by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

Power Systems & Controls was contacted by Long Island Rail Road to participate in a tender project for two Frequency Converter systems that they needed to support signaling railroad operations. There was numerous stages in the review process, and countless drawings from Engineering were required as PS&C continually worked with LIRR to design the perfect solution for their project.

LIRR selected PS&C because we offered a super product, great customer service, and our attention to detail from incorporating Engineering’s insight and support. We beat out numerous other competitors for the project. PS&C is already in production of the (2) large Rotary Frequency Converters, which should be ready to ship ahead of schedule. Power Systems & Controls is excited to help and support LIRR, and can’t wait to work with them again in the near future.

Electrical Market Needs Rotary

PS&C has noticed increasing interest for Power Conditioning equipment to support less traditional markets. It seems that a majority of the new inquiries for power quality systems and services are being generated from industrial facilities. In many cases, they are from facilities that have installed new equipment on production lines. Industrial Facilities are subject to a variety of power problems. The most common are equipment shutdowns (affecting both the older systems, as well as, the new ones), voltage sags (both on utility & inside the plant), and harmonic distortion (caused by Adjustable Speed Drives/ASD).

In addition, we have heard of instances from various utility companies where neighbors of industrial plants have called to complain about disruptions to their power caused by the plants across the street. How does this happen? In most cases, it’s because the Industrial Plants have replaced older processing systems with newer, state-of-the-art systems. And while the new systems increase productivity improve quality and lower costs, they can also cause unexpected problems within the electrical system. These problems can be anything from improper equipment operation to complete equipment shutdown every time there is a minor disturbance on the electrical system.

PS&C has been witness to end users who try a range of solutions with varying degrees of success. One was to install new, very large Automatic Voltage Regulators, harmonic canceling transformers, Power Factor Correction capacitors, and small static UPS systems. In some cases, these devices not only didn’t work, they actually ended up causing more problems. Other solutions included correcting facility grounding problems, installing Motor-Generators for voltage regulation, and/or isolation from the power source, and removing capacitors and installing Synchronous Condensers to correct power factor problems without the danger of creating resonance points.

Just as the benefits of Hybrid Rotary UPS systems have made to computer power protection, large rotary systems can be the best value in many industrial applications as well. Static UPS systems, TVSS’s, and traditional power protection devices have their place but rotary systems offer abilities and performance benefits that other technologies are unable to do.

Evolution To Higher Reliability

To those who only view the Series XC from the outside, it looks very much like the original XC in 1990. Externally, only the analog meters have been replaced by a digital metering panel. But within the XC’s sheet metal, dramatic changes are occurring.

Each change has been carefully engineered to improve reliability and performance. These changes are designed to blend into the XC, not cause obsolescence. The XC leads the UPS industry to reliability, and this evolution is quietly increasing that lead. This increasing reliability is the result of better components, fewer connections, and redundancy in critical areas.

This evolution began when the Digital Rectifier Board (Early 1992) was installed in the XC. It replaced eight control cards and many connections. The Universal Detector Board (Late 1992) replaced twelve individual detectors. The Digital Display Board (Early 1993) eliminated a cumbersome gang switch and seven meters. The Inverter Phase Control Board and the Inverter Gate Driver Board (Late 1994) replaces fourteen circuit boards. Each of these changes has been carefully engineered to be phased into the XC, providing compatibility with older XC models. More than thirty circuits boards and assemblies were eliminated with the resulting elimination of hundreds of wires, each a potential point of failure. There were other changes, such as new redundant 120 volt DC power supplies that provide the power to open circuit breakers in an emergency.

The PLC was changed to allow more functions in single module systems. Because of its high speed serial communications capability, the new PLC (Early 1993) in multiple module systems has eliminated one hundred wires per module. For added protection, the communications link is redundant. The evolution of the Series XC is an example of the continuing efforts that PS&C makes to provide the best possible product to meet its customers’ needs. At PS&C we take seriously our commitment to keep our user’s critical load supported.
