Long Island Rail Road Selects PS&C

The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) is a commuter system provider serving Long Island and New York. It is the second busiest commuter railroad in North America serving millions of passengers each year. Established in 1834 and having operated continuously since then, it is the oldest US railroad still operating under its original name and charter. There are 124 stations on the LIRR with more than 700 miles of track, and it is publicly owned by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

Power Systems & Controls was contacted by Long Island Rail Road to participate in a tender project for two Frequency Converter systems that they needed to support signaling railroad operations. There was numerous stages in the review process, and countless drawings from Engineering were required as PS&C continually worked with LIRR to design the perfect solution for their project.

LIRR selected PS&C because we offered a super product, great customer service, and our attention to detail from incorporating Engineering’s insight and support. We beat out numerous other competitors for the project. PS&C is already in production of the (2) large Rotary Frequency Converters, which should be ready to ship ahead of schedule. Power Systems & Controls is excited to help and support LIRR, and can’t wait to work with them again in the near future.

Power Systems & Controls has a state of the art production and test facility located in Richmond, VA allowing for easy access to Washington, DC and the east coast. Electrical Market Needs Rotary

PS&C has noticed increasing interest for Power Conditioning equipment to support less traditional markets. It seems that a majority of the new inquiries for power quality systems and services are being generated from industrial facilities. In many cases, they are from facilities that have installed new equipment on production lines. Industrial Facilities are subject to a variety of power problems. The most common are equipment shutdowns (affecting both the older systems, as well as, the new ones), voltage sags (both on utility & inside the plant), and harmonic distortion (caused by Adjustable Speed Drives/ASD).

In addition, we have heard of instances from various utility companies where neighbors of industrial plants have called to complain about disruptions to their power caused by the plants across the street. How does this happen? In most cases, it’s because the Industrial Plants have replaced older processing systems with newer, state-of-the-art systems. And while the new systems increase productivity improve quality and lower costs, they can also cause unexpected problems within the electrical system. These problems can be anything from improper equipment operation to complete equipment shutdown every time there is a minor disturbance on the electrical system.

PS&C has been witness to end users who try a range of solutions with varying degrees of success. One was to install new, very large Automatic Voltage Regulators, harmonic canceling transformers, Power Factor Correction capacitors, and small static UPS systems. In some cases, these devices not only didn’t work, they actually ended up causing more problems. Other solutions included correcting facility grounding problems, installing Motor-Generators for voltage regulation, and/or isolation from the power source, and removing capacitors and installing Synchronous Condensers to correct power factor problems without the danger of creating resonance points.

Just as the benefits of Hybrid Rotary UPS systems have made to computer power protection, large rotary systems can be the best value in many industrial applications as well. Static UPS systems, TVSS’s, and traditional power protection devices have their place but rotary systems offer abilities and performance benefits that other technologies are unable to do.

PS&C – Service, Support & Training

New Manila Distributor

Power Systems & Controls is pleased to announce that Remax International, under Power Division, (Manila, Philippines) has been appointed full servicing distributor status for the Asian Pacific region. The expanded Remax/PS&C 10 year relationship will bring the same level of Field Service and support to our customers abroad as those in the United States.

During a recent visit to the Philippines by John Comstock, Vice President, and Wayne Chalkley, Director of Special Projects, all the needed work was completed to qualify the Remax organization as a servicing distributor. Remax will maintain full parts warehousing and a technical support center with factory trained technical personnel to support all PS&C Products in the Asian Pacific. John Comstock said “The professionalism and attention to detail needed to deliver the quality of service is evident in the people and facilities I have seen here.  I was extremely pleased with the warm reception I received and the obvious trust our customers have in the Remax organization”.

PS&C has found that electrical power quality in the Asian Pacific is just as large of an issue as it is in the United States. Remax, like PS&C, comes from a background in computers and computer support.  Our companies understand the need for reliable, high quality electrical power. We feel that rotary Power Conditioning systems can meet the everyday challenges we found during our visit to the Philippines. The solutions range from complete UPS systems to Synchronous Condensers for Power Factor Correction.

The major challenge we see is to help our customers understand that the systems they use today have different electrical needs than the systems used in the past.  Today we see the same problems in high rise buildings and in the semi-conductor plant. These problems are not unique to the Philippines. We see these same issues in the U.S. and countries all over the world. Our work with electric companies in the U.S. has given PS&C the knowledge to solve issues that were once thought to be the power company’s problem. We feel that Remax and PS&C can help companies in the Philippines solve their problems in timely and cost effective ways.

Keeping In Touch Around the World

As PS&C’s products are being installed worldwide, there is a need to provide a high level of quality Service to all sites. PS&C offers a service which allows it to monitor the status of its UPS products wherever they are installed. This service is referred to as our SCADA system (System Control And Data Acquisition). The SCADA system consists of an on-site desktop computer that uses PS&C custom software to acquire all voltages, currents, power, and status information from the Uninterruptible Power Supply PLC.

This data is present in all PS&C Products. It is used to make the decisions necessary to insure that protected power is provided to the user’s critical load. The SCADA software acquires this system data via a serial link from the PLC. Both RS-232 and RS-422/485 serial links are available to allow the desktop computer to be separated from the PLC by a few feet or several thousand feet, allowing the maximum flexibility for locating the desktop computer. The data gathered by the SCADA computer is monitored by computers at PS&C via a direct dial-in modem. The data monitoring process is non-intrusive, and the acquisition of this data and status information is totally transparent to the operation of the UPS. The gathering of this data allows PS&C to establish trends which will allow for proper scheduling of preventative maintenance. In the event a UPS should experience fault, the SCADA becomes a powerful troubleshooting tool.

When a fault occurs, the SCADA software takes multiple “snapshots” of all system data before, during, and after fault event. The fault history allows the technician to diagnose the problem remotely. If a visit to the site is necessary, the Field Service technician is much better equipped to quickly solve the problem as a result of having reviewed the fault history stored in the SCADA computer. PS&C’s SCADA software is a powerful tool to improve the quality of its service to all its UPS users.
