PS&C Offers Many Solutions

In our thirty years of providing products and services to critical power customers, PS&C has observed many changes in the industry. Obviously, the focus for years was on large Data Centers and Telecommunication facilities. The power demands of these applications were considerable and the importance of clean, uninterrupted electrical power was obvious. Over twenty years later, in addition to the large data centers, we now see critical operations being decentralized in the Office, Test & Research Labs, and Manufacturing locations. Quite often power quality is an unexpected problem. In response to this need, we can perform an analysis of a customer’s electrical system to determine the exact causes of their power problems.

Also in response to the smaller electrical loads which require maximum reliability, we now offer the Series MC from 30kVA up to 250kVA. This RUPS, like our larger Series XC, is a true online design. While it continuously produces clean, isolated power from its synchronous generator, the electrical load is provided with a perfect sine wave. When a disturbance or outage is long enough to require the UPS to draw power from the battery, nothing such as a switch or transfer needs to occur. We believe that this is the ultimate in power protection as do all of our satisfied customers.

Power Systems & Controls has a state of the art production and test facility located in Richmond, VA allowing for easy access to Washington, DC and the east coast. Rocky Mountain Electrical League

Power Management Systems & Sales Inc. is a Colorado corporation established in 1987 as a distributor of Surge Suppression equipment. As their customer base increased, it became necessary to add more power quality products to their lineup in order to accommodate customers’ evolving requirements. Their quest to find the right solution for each customer led them to Power Systems & Controls, Inc. (PS&C). According to Mr. Rick Marsh, president of Power Management, “Power Systems & Controls provides excellent products with unmatched reliability and service. We feel extremely comfortable bringing them into a project.” Power Management’s areas of expertise include the industrial and commercial arenas with specialization in the medical, telecommunication, process controls, and fabrication industries.

PS&C was recently featured at the UPS seminar held by the Rocky Mountain Electrical League on behalf of Power Management Systems & Sales Inc. in Denver, CO. This seminar focused on state-of-the-art Static UPS and Hybrid Rotary UPS systems. Four different UPS technologies were represented, including Battery Free UPS, Static UPS, static switch technology UPS, and Rotary UPS systems. The RMEL is a growing association of manufacturers, utilities, and end users who mostly operate outside the traditional computer related power conditioning applications. PS&C was very pleased to be selected to present the Hybrid Rotary UPS technology to what is an emerging market segment concerned with overall electrical power quality.

PS&C at Southwest Electrical Expo

Houston – Power Systems & Controls exhibited the Series SC Synchronous Condenser at the 1996 Southwest Electrical Exposition held at the J.R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas. PS&C, along with our local representatives, Power Reps Inc. (PRI), dominated isle 600 with six separate booths highlighting power quality offerings such as harmonic metering, substation design, transformers, and PS&C’s Power Conditioning products for the industrial power user.

The Series SC was extremely well received as an alternative to capacitors for Power Factor Correction. Utilities in the Houston area are among the first to acknowledge their additional transmission cost to lower power factor customers. Local industrial electrical rates account for this with kVA demand charges. The Series SC has the ability to correct power factor regardless of harmonics, without switching transients, and at a reasonable price, generated a lot of interest at the show.

Glass Manufacturer Chooses PS&C

Prompted by customer demand, Power Systems & Controls has introduced a new line of its successful Hybrid Rotary UPS products. The new line has been labeled the Series MC. The name “MC” is an extension of the Series XC line, which means a product for the twenty-first century. The Series MC is configured in two different packages. The 30, 50, 75kVA units are housed in a single package with the motor-generator (M-G) in a vertical arrangement. The larger kVA sizes of 100, 150, and 200 are also in a single package but its M-G is in a horizontal arrangement. It was one of these first horizontal Series MC units that captured the interest of a glass manufacturer in Auburn Hills, Michigan.

Guardian Industries is one of the world’s leading producers of glass for the automotive and construction industries. It has sixteen plants throughout the world and uses a “floating glass” method, in which molten glass “floats” on a pool of liquid tin and is drawn out as a continuous ribbon. It is during this phase of the process where it is critical to maintain electrical power by means of a UPS. Power interruptions cause the glass to cool prematurely causing a sticky mess, which is expensive to clean. More importantly, glass production is halted for as much as a full day – production that can never be recovered.

Guardian Industries had already been sold on using the dependable rotary type UPS for electric power backup. They installed their first PS&C Series XC UPS in their South America plant in the late 1980’s. They became intrigued; however, when they were introduced to the single package Series MC Hybrid Rotary UPS, and decided it would be the ideal solution for their plant in DeWitt, Iowa. Multiple 150kVA Series MC units are currently being installed and are expected to be online in late March. This specific unit will have an added advantage of being linked via diagnostic computer and modem to PS&C’s Field Service Department in Richmond, VA.

AMI Selects PS&C In Idaho

American Microsystems, Inc. (AMI) is a custom microchip fabricator located in Pocatello, Idaho that produces many of its chips for the control systems of aircraft, like the new Boeing 777. Like other chip manufacturers, AMI was keenly aware of the importance of protecting its sensitive fabrication processes since downtime results in loss of production, and loss of revenue. Larry Fisher, P.E., AMI’s Plant Engineer responsible for overall power quality, was convinced that a Hybrid Rotary UPS was the way to go because of its historically proven technology and ruggedness. All that was left was choosing the UPS that best suited AMI’s needs and budget.

PS&C has been building the most reliable Rotary UPS systems for over 30 years. Furthermore, we have experience in the fabrication market with UPS systems already online at Intel, Texas Instruments, American Micro Devices, Hitachi, and Motorola Worldwide. Since we’d visited with Mr. Fisher on several occasions, he was already familiar with our UPS technology, Field Service, and life cycle cost scenario. He was also aware of our continuing efforts to identify and eliminate single point failure components. After making a full product line presentation to Mr. Fisher and his staff, PS&C offered AMI a new Series XC 1000kVA UPS.

The equipment was shipped to AMI for a July 1995 installation and start-up. Barely two months later, during the weekend of September 9-10, the Pocatello, Idaho area experienced a power outage. AMI, with its PS&C UPS, rode through the outage without so much as a hiccup! The system remained online throughout the outage and protected the sensitive fab manufacturing systems.
