PS&C Supports GEICO

The Government Employees Insurance Company (GEICO) headquartered in Bethesda, MD sells insurance policies exclusively through the use of 800# telephones and a network of computer work stations connected to a powerful mainframe computer. When computer power is interrupted, the business of insurance is interrupted. In early 1992, when GEICO planned a new “state of the art” computer center in Fredericksburg, VA, critical power protection was a vital component to these plans. Sam Torrence, Facility Manager at GEICO, recognized that “a reliable UPS system is like a power insurance policy”. Sam, with his ten years’ experience in working with UPS systems, concluded the best solution was a PS&C Hybrid Rotary UPS because it offered the highest level of reliability.

GEICO purchased (12) PS&C Series XC UPS systems, each with 15 minute battery backup. The project will be under the supervising eye of GHT Engineers of Arlington, VA. PS&C will interface its Hybrid Rotary UPS with other equipment that not only will form a fully compatible critical power system, but will also be networked with sophisticated central monitoring and control. Sam is looking forward to operating PS&C’s machines at his new facility. The entire staff of PS&C looks forward to the challenge presented by GEICO to supply it with “power insurance” Power Systems & Controls mission is always to help, support, and satisfy our customers & clients.

PS&C Constantly Improving

The Series XC contains a six pulse rectifier/battery charger. Previous generation rectifier controls were seldom balanced, seldom stable with respect to firing angles, and were not designed to minimize harmonic content of the input current. This lack of precision and control resulted in distribution of harmonics whose amplitudes were not predictable.

Therefore, PS&C has developed a new Digital Rectifier Control Board to address this phenomenon. The new board eliminates all even harmonics and it makes the distribution of harmonics predictable. These two features alone would justify the design effort, but there is more. The Digital Rectifier Control Board easily maintains 1% regulation of the battery voltage and DC link, provides a timed current limit (walk-up), and accepts an input from an optional battery current limit board. In addition, it monitors the health of its power supplies the utility voltage, and has an upper voltage clamp to prevent excessive DC link voltages. The new Digital Rectifier Control Board is just one more example of our commitment to continually improve PS&C Products and Services.

PS&C Supports Metrobank Manila HQ

Metrobank in the Philippines has ordered (4) 250kVA Hybrid Rotary UPS systems for their critical data center in Manila. The UPS systems are configured in two (N+1) redundant configurations. Metropolitan Bank and Trust Company (Metrobank) is one of the two largest private commercial/universal banks in the Philippines. It has a very large data communications network that covers more than 200 branches spread throughout the various islands.

Metrobank decided to purchase a PS&C Series MC UPS system after experiencing a major disaster last December when business was at its peak due to the approaching Christmas holidays. At the height of its online operation on December 22nd, the utility power failed and a 150kVA static UPS supporting the mainframe, and another 150kVA static UPS on standby, both failed. The entire database was lost. The UPS systems were repaired within a day; however, it took three days to restore the database. Before the disaster Metrobank had some concern about the rotary (motor generator) topology, but after the disaster they understood the importance of having the greatest MTBF possible.

Siemens Solar Selects PS&C

The majority of Power Specialists’ Inc. sales are the Washington D.C. power line with companies such as Control Concepts, Itronics, Avtec Power Systems, etc. but they are working hard to make Power Systems & Controls a large part of their business. Power Specialists is the representative firm in southern California who recently brought home an order for Siemens Solar. This order was for 750kva Hybrid Rotary UPS systems with a 5 minute battery. Siemens Solar wanted to back up a number of German built wire saws. The saws are used by them to produce silicon wafers for solar panels.

Power Specialists were contacted by Tolar & Associates (Siemens’ Engineering Firm) and asked to provide a budgetary quote. A package was sent which was followed by a presentation at Toler & Associates by our very own Mr. Gene Weaver, PS&C Regional Sales Manager. Several additional contacts were made and many questions were answered. The system shipped the last week in September with a December start-up schedule, which PS&C Field Service will handle. This order is truly unique in that the total elapsed time from first contact to order placement was only 3 weeks. We were awarded the order because of our quick response, superior offering, and the fact that PS&C has a good representative sales force in the area to act as a liaison.

NASA – Kennedy Space Center

McDonnell Douglas, NASA’s prime contractor, awarded a million dollar subcontract to Power Systems & Controls in 1992 to provide all planning, Design, testing, hardware, installation, and Training necessary to insure an uninterruptible power supply of power to the Space Station Processing Facility at Cape Canaveral.

The SSOF will be a 457,000 square foot facility that will serve as a primary pre-flight check out and processing point for Space Station Freedom elements. The three story structure, the largest new construction facility undertaken at Kennedy Space Center since the Apollo era, will include communications and electrical control areas, laboratories, logistics staging areas, operational control rooms, an office area, and a cafeteria.

McDonnell Douglas and NASA engineers conducted an exhaustive search stating in the spring of 1989 to find the power protection system with the highest reliability. They concluded that a rotary UPS system and in particular PS&C’s hybrid approach, eg: matching electronics and a rotary filter best met the demanding requirements of the Space Station Processing Facility. Power Systems & Controls will be installing (2) Series XC Hybrid Rotary UPS systems operating in a parallel redundant configuration to be on line in June of 1993.

NASA engineers were particularly impressed with the complete isolation offered by the hybrid rotary uninterruptible power supply because of the high incidence of lightning activity experienced at Cape Canaveral. A team approach was used by PS&C to identify the particular needs and fulfill the stringent requirements necessary to work with McDonnell Douglas. The team was spearheaded by PS&C’s South Eastern Regional Sales Manager, Mr. Larry Sheets, who was responsible for putting together the elements from Engineering, Field Service, and Quality Assurance needed to make a successful project. The team is approaching the half way point in the project with all project design milestones having been met and equipment nearing production completion. Test, with customer witness, will commence in January of 1993. The Space Station Processing Center is PS&C’s first major project with NASA and we are confident that PS&C is ready to tackle future NASA projects.

Federal Reserve Bank – New Orleans

Power Systems & Controls recently was awarded a contract to supply the critical power backup needs for the Federal Reserve Bank of New Orleans. The bank, which handles billions of dollars daily, has been plagued by numerous power interruptions to its network of high speed computers. PS&C Hybrid Rotary UPS systems are being installed in a power house on top of a parking garage, adjacent to the main bank building, to solve those problems. A scheduled “online” date for the UPS in early summer will permit the bank to transact its business with “uninterrupted” peace of mind.

Starting in the fall of 1991, Power Systems & Controls worked closely with the Mathes’ Group (Consulting engineers to the Federal Reserve Bank) to provide the technical assistance to bring the pieces of the complex project together. Initially the Mathes’ Group was using a German machine as the basis for their design but through the consultative selling skills of PS&C they discovered the superiority of the American design. They responded to PS&C’s online reliability, horizontally mounted M-G for total electrical isolation, and separated inverter console for ease of maintenance.

PS&C At Second Largest U.S. Refinery

Personal and unexpected attention always improves relationships and helps to create loyal customers. It is amazing how much people appreciate knowing that their business is valued and that someone cares! A great example is the Exxon refinery at Baton Rouge, which installed a PS&C Rotary Uninterruptible Power Supply, in February of 1992, that protects major operations from electrical outages.

The UPS provides electricity to the computers and software programs that control and monitor the refinery’s fractionators, catalytic crackers, and other units. If those systems lose power, the refinery runs less efficiently and becomes susceptible to operational shut downs. The entire electrical protection system consists of (2) PS&C RUPS, an 8-foot-tall bank of batteries and an 800 kW generator safeguards against instantaneous electrical dips and surges during storms that can damage refinery controls. The battery provides continuous power and protection during even the slightest outage, and if there is an extended power loss the diesel generator can run the equipment.

The PS&C RUPS and its components make Exxon Baton Rouge self-sufficient. This independence was thoroughly tested recently when Hurricane Andrew ripped through the area leaving massive destruction behind. When contacted by PS&C’s Service Coordinator, sources at Exxon told us that the entire system rode through the storm just fine. They were very pleased with our call, concern, and attention.

Years of Experience Proves Reliability

The PS&C Service Division recently surveyed customers to get historical data concerning bearing failures. All customers contacted had PS&C Service Maintenance Contracts or purchased maintenance at regular intervals. The results may amaze you. In 22 years of operation of over 350 systems, only two bearing replacements were recorded. One at the Patent and Trade Office in Washington D.C., a site with four 1000kVA systems. A pony motor bearing was replaced after a noise was detected during operation and the second was at Cincinnati Bell in Maitland, Florida as a generator bearing was noticed to be running warmer than normal during the start-up and was replaced before the unit was put on-line.

When analyzed this really is not surprising. PS&C’s motor generators actually consist of two synchronous generators, the identical type of synchronous generator that is supplied with every gen-set sold in the world. They just use one machine as a motor. PS&C also adds one additional bearing to each machine; this spreads the weight out over four bearings. PS&C runs the Power Conditioning M-G continuously; which causes less stress on the overall bearings that the start/stop type of operation of a typical gen-set.
