Alstom Grid Canada was established in 1964 and is a subsidiary of Alstom, a fortune 500 company that employs 100,000 people in 100 counties around the world. They manufacture a complete range of HV electrical equipment for transmission and distribution networks, including: high voltage switchgear, transformers, packages and turnkey systems, flexible alternative current transmission systems and power quality systems, decentralized and renewable energy supply, automation, protection and control systems, industrial metering, energy management and trading systems.

Alstom selected Power Systems & Controls to provide 250kVA Automatic Voltage Regulators to support their SaskPower Swift Current SVS project. The Swift Current Station is located within the Municipality of Swift Current in southwest Saskatchewan, Canada. Our AVR systems will be utilized in support of the installation of their Static Var Systems (SVS) connected at 128kV (-40/+150MVars).

A global sourcing search was done by Alstom Grid Canada to find the correct supplier, and it was determined that PS&C was one of the few in the world that could meet their stringent guidelines and requirements. This is PS&C’s first opportunity to work with Alstom Grid Canada and we look forward to supporting their operations in the future.

PS&C Powers Long Island Rail Road (LIRR)

Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) is a commuter rail system in southeastern New York, stretching from Manhattan to Long Island. The LIRR is the only commuter passenger railroad in the United States that operates 24/7 and is the busiest rail in North America. Long Island Rail Road contacted PS&C to support their Frequency Conversion needs as they required unique frequencies to power their rail signaling system.

LIRR required almost a dozen Rotary Frequency Converters to provide 25Hz and 100Hz throughout the whole rail system. PS&C is one of the only Frequency Converter manufacturers in the world that could meet the requirement and was known to LIRR from successfully supporting their operations previously. We are proud to help power the mass rail market and look forward to our continued support of LIRR.

AEGIS Selects PS&C

The AEGIS Combat System is an integrated naval weapons system developed by the Missile and Surface Radar Division of RCA, and is now supported and produced by Lockheed Martin. The weapons system utilizes powerful computer and radar technology to track and guide weapons to destroy incoming enemy targets. The word “Aegis” is a Greek mythology reference to a protective shield as the Aegis was the shield of the Goddess Athena.

The AEGIS system was initially implemented by the U.S. Navy but is now used around the world, including: Japanese Navy, Spanish Navy, Norwegian Navy, Korean Navy, and Australian Navy. It makes up the backbone of the United States missile defense system and is currently being adopted by NATO across Eastern Europe as a deterrent against the possibility of future threats.

Power Systems & Controls was selected by the contractors responsible for the project to provide Static Frequency Converters, which would supply 400Hz to sensitive electrical equipment. We can’t go into too much detail due to the sensitive nature of the application, but we look forward to the small part PS&C has to play in helping to protect the United States of America.
